Miss Turkey sentenced to 14 months imprisonment for insulting president

Miss Turkey 2006 Merve Buyuksarac has been handed a 14-month imprisonment for insulting Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan on her Instagram account.

In 2014, Buyuksarac wrote a poem which she called "The Master’s Poem" on her timeline using verses from Turkey's national anthem while throwing dabs at Erdoga. A Turkish this week court found her guilty "defamation" and "publicly insulting" the Turkish leader.

On why she wrote the poem 27-year-old Miss Buyuksarac said:
“I shared it because I found it funny. I had no intention to insult President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.”
