The two are said to have been paid Sh400 (about 1,000 naira) each to retrieve the equipment that was thrown in the pit at the height of the crackdown by chiefs and police officers.
According to a father and brother of one of the deceased, the two were using a rope to go down the hole but when the first man did not respond, his colleague went down to rescue him and perished as well.
Their bodies were retrieved by experts from the Kiambu County Government in an operation led by Kiambu County government chief of staff in administration and public service, Dominic Gicheru, and taken to the Thika Level 5 Hospital Mortuary.
The experts had to use oxygen equipment to enter into the deep borehole, which according to Gicheru had no air from 65 feet down.
Gicheru cautioned the residents against getting into into deep holes saying they should call the Kiambu County Government incase of any tragedy as the government had enough equipment for disaster management.
Their employer went into hiding after learning of the incident.
The war on illicit brew began last year after President Uhuru Kenyatta banned illicit and second-generation brews in the country.
