Missing Boat Finally Found, 22 Survivors On Board



As many as 22 passengers from a boat, which went missing with over 100 people aboard in eastern Indonesia, have been rescued while 3 were found dead, a spokesman of the Indonesian Transport Ministry said on Sunday.

The boat was sailing from Kolaka in Southeast Sulawesi to Siwa in South Sulawesi before it lost contact with land at around 23:00 on Saturday.

Six rescue boats and ships were sent from Kendari and Makassar after they received a distress call from the crew who reported that the vessel was starting to take on water about 21 kilometers (13 miles) southeast of Siwa port in Wajo district, Asikin said.

According to Indonesian National Search and Rescue Agency, on board the boat are all Indonesians.

Rescue efforts are currently underway despite adverse weather conditions, according to the rescue center.

Update: World Street Journal reports that a total of 39 people has been rescued while the confirmed death toll remains 3. The ship had 110 passengers and 12 crew onboard when it capsized.
