Army uncovers how insurgents make IED bombs

The Nigerian Army said yesterday it has discovered how Boko Haram terrorists manufacture some of the bombs deployed and used in suicide bomb attacks in the North-East.
Army spokesman, Colonel Sani Usman, said in Abuja that some of the items recently recovered from the terrorists have confirmed suspicions and intelligence reports that the insurgents often use corrugated roofing sheets and bathroom slippers mixed with other chemicals in making lethal Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).
He remarked that although the devices may be crude in nature, the explosives have often slowed down troops advances in some of the terrorist locations. Usman disclosed that units of troops moving towards Banki axis Tuesday afternoon cleared more terrorist camps and captured several weapons, flags and ready-for-use IEDs at Jangolori and Bulaburma villages.
He explained that “the campaign against the terrorists has continued yielding the desired results because Boko Haram fi ghters are fast running out of arms, ammunition, food and other logistics.
Usman commended the spirit of collaboration, intelligence gathering capability and information sharing system established between the Nigerian Armed Forces and soldiers from neighbouring countries in the Multinational Joint Task Force, adding the measures have greatly helped in the campaign and troops are now optimistic that the terrorists would soon be defeated.
While appealing to members of the public to continue assisting troops with information on the activities of the insurgents, the Army spokesman warned that since the terrorists are now on the run, there is need for villagers to be more vigilant and security conscious to ensure that terrorists do not live among them.
“Consequently, there is need for more alertness among all to preempt the terrorists and other criminal elements in the society,” he said.
